1 Professor Yang's life was an immortal legend in exploring the unknown and a profound embodiment of his love for his homeland. “Better to be genuine than clever; better to be simple than ornate” reflected both his academic attitude and his life stance.
①explore the unknown探索未知。这里的the unknown是the+形容词泛指一类事物,和the old(老年人)用法类似。也可以写出explore+uncharted/unfamiliar territory(全新/陌生领域)。
②a profound embodiment of相当于profoundly embody。 Failure to comply with the regulations could result in financial penalties.
③Better to...than to... It is:It is better to do sth than to...=To do sth is better than to do sth。 Better to do well than to say well.
2 His life stands as a timeless chapter in human history—one that shines not only for China but for the global community of thinkers and innovators.
The building stands as the last remaining relic of the town's cotton industry.
Graduation from university means entering the next chapter of one's life.
③one that...是一个同位语,修饰前面的a timeless chapter in human history。
The elderly are at a disadvantage in a digital society—one that is dominated by smartphones and the internet.
④shines后面引导了个并列结构not only...but...,这里but also中的also省略了,而but在这里起关键的连接作用,不能省略。如果not only和but also是位于两句话中,but也是可以省略的:Regular exercise is not only physically beneficial. It is also benefits mental health.
